10 Language terms

This glossary can help you prepare for the IELTS writing tasks related to the Method of language learning.

advantage: noun; A condition or circumstance that puts one in a favourable or superior position.; Example: This has the advantage of providing many opportunities to practise what you learn with a number of different people.
comfortable: adjective; (especially of clothes or furnishings) providing physical ease and relaxation.; Example: The student can work at a pace which is comfortable for them.
foreign language: noun phrase; A foreign language is a language not commonly spoken in the country of the speaker.; Example: The question of how to learn a foreign language has become greatly important in recent years.
improve: verb; Make or become better.; Example: Students may not get the individual attention they require to improve.
individual attention: noun phrase; Of, relating to, characteristic of, or meant for a single person or thing; special on separate attention.; Example: The amount of individual attention you receive is certainly an advantage of working with a private tutor.
opportunity: noun; A time or set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.; Example: This has the advantage of providing many opportunities to practise what you learn with a number of different people.
private tutor: noun phrase; Private tutors provide one-on-one educational assistance to elementary and secondary school students or to adults.; Example: The amount of individual attention you receive is certainly an advantage of working with a private tutor.
social element: noun phrase; Denoting or relating to human society or any of its subdivisions.; Example: Working with a private tutor can lack the social element, which is crucial in learning to communicate well in a foreign language.
social interaction: noun phrase; A social interaction is an exchange between two or more individuals and is a building block of society.; Example: Not only is every social interaction a chance to practise, but you are also exposed to the real, living language.
traditionally: adverb; As part of a long-established custom, practice, or belief; typically.; Example: Traditionally, people have learned languages as part of a large group in a classroom.
